Educating the Whole Child in our Global School Community

Posted by Sandy Spring Friends School on Dec 10, 2019 9:02:54 PM

At SSFS we seek to educate children in all areas of their lives so that they may become effective citizens of the world. As such, the thematic content of our new syllabus is organized around addressing the following query: how do we educate the whole child in our increasingly connected, global community?

With this guiding principle in mind, we focused the program on eight content areas: Social Justice, Culture, Mindfulness, Financial Literacy, Sexual Health/Consent, Emotional Intelligence, Digital Citizenship, and Diversity.

Throughout the academic year, every two weeks our boarders will participate in an interactive presentation spanning a variety of current and relevant topics relating to our eight areas of study. Students also have the opportunity to reflect and journal on the subject matter via our new subscription to Thrively, a multifaceted, convertible learning platform.

The Dorm Wellness Program kicked off in October with a 30-day challenge to get students to become more active, which includes regular workouts, and to start eating healthier.  Phase 1 was a big success, in part, because the kids thrived and showed great determination and resilience.

Coordinate Your Student's Travel with Holly

Posted by Sandy Spring Friends School on Dec 10, 2019 1:09:02 PM

Hello!

My name is Holly White and I am on the dorm staff here at SSFS. This is my second year here. Before this job, I lived in Eau Claire, WI and went to school at a university there.

Sandy Spring, Maryland, is very different from my hometown of Wisconsin, but I love being part of this welcoming community built on the foundation of the SPICES. I never attended a boarding school program, but I spent each of my summers at a sleep-away camp and recognize the independence, strong friendships, and community that comes with being a part of a residential program. It truly is an honor to be part of this spectacular environment with such wonderful students.

While working in the dorm, one of my responsibilities is coordinating travel. This entails managing the logistics for holiday breaks, long weekends, and even one-day trips for our students.

Community Service Builds Bonds

Posted by Sandy Spring Friends School on Feb 7, 2017 10:00:00 AM

Adding community service to a school curriculum is beneficial to children and our future in many ways. Classroom projects such as planting a garden, adopting a highway, or collecting food for families in need fosters teamwork among students, illustrates the importance of giving back, and helps children explore their local community and find out more about the world around them. Skilled teachers also use community service to explore topics in social studies, economics, civics, English, and more.
